'First Aider' is a very large term as people call them self a First Aider after attending a 1 day basic course and then you get people classed as a First Aider when they can do OP (Oropharyngeal airway / Guerdel), Cervical Collars, Epi-Pens, Oxygen, Entonox, Spinal Boarding etc etc the list literally goes on and on!

The simple answer is yes a 'First Aider' can do log rolls and spinal boarding BUT you must have done training in this, which if you are asking the question would make me think you haven't.

The other question you have to ask IF you are trained is that have you got all the equipment? How long is an ambulance going to be? If its going to be 45mins most people wont spinal board a patient purely because of the risk of blisters etc from being on a hard board for such a long time however they would almost definitely apply a Cervical Collar / Extrication Collar.

In relation to Log Rolling this is still carried out but the current recommended best practice used for Spinal Boarding is actually if appropriate to use a scoop strecther to scoop the patient up and then transfer them using this onto a Spinal Board. However patients aren't always on there back despite nearly all assessments they happen like that (trust me its not true!) so if they are laying on there side it may be more appropriate to use a Spinal Board lay it along them and then roll both the patient and board over. Again when you train to do Spinal Boarding etc you learn that. I personally am not trained in Spinal Boarding etc but I have assisted a large amount of times with the procedure.

If you are 'head hugging' someone the ambulance crew will apply a collar and they will ask are you happy continuing and then when and if they roll the patient you are effectively in control although they help you and tell you what to do and say!

Hope that answers your question!
